She tries to hand out compliments
but they don’t make me feel good.
I’ve been down this road before
where words like this are really
stiff backhands to my psyche.
It’s her way of being kind in the
midst of breaking things off, as if
pointing out the nice qualities
is supposed to let me down easy.
But her words throb like broken toes,
a constant reminder that I’m watching
her walk away, saying in coded terms
that I’m not the man she wants,
that in the picture she’s drawn up
I don’t fit within the lines.

that in the picture she’s drawn up
I don’t fit within the lines...ugh...that's so tough... and sometimes if someone tries to end it nice it makes everything worse...the one thing i wonder is if i would want to fit in someone's lines.. i would expect them to be thinks...

Wow, the close on this is so strong. I definitely would not care to fit into someone else's preconceived plan. I prefer someone who colors all over my page.

I agree with Susan, very strong ending. All the more potent for me as there are personal echoes. Thank you for writing it.

dont fit within the lines of if we want to you know....because if we do, then do they love us or who they can make us...and when they cant make us...what happens then?

Man's rejection is God's protection. Still it hurts sometimes. This poem has such a realistic quality to it, something we all can relate to at different times in our lives.
